Ga. Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Mop Attack

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Georgia man has been sentenced to 20 years
in prison after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including hitting an Alabama prison guard with a mop.

Henry County, Ala., court clerk Shirline Vickers told the Dothan Eagle that 19-year-old Antonio Marvette Bell of Covington, Ga., admitted to five felony charges, including first-degree receiving stolen property, first-degree escape, second-degree escape, second-degree assault and promoting prison contraband.

The assault charge came from what sheriff's officials said was an attack on a corrections officer with a mop stick after Bell reported a spill in his jail cell. He had been in jail since July 2009 on weapons and theft charges.

Authorities say Bell tried to escape during a November 2009 court hearing with a homemade set of handcuff keys.

His attorney could not be reached for comment.
