WEST POINT, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a 21-year-old Opelika man has drowned in West Point Lake while on a church outing.
The Opelika-Auburn News reports that 21-year-old Geovanni Cesena, a native of El Salvador, drowned Sunday. He was with a group of about 85 people from New Life Church in Auburn.
Troup County Coroner Jeff Cook says Cesena and a friend were trying to swim out to a buoy around 2:30 p.m. when Cesena said he was getting tired. When the friend reached the buoy and looked back, Cesena had gone under.
Pastor Abimael Arenas said people jumped in to help but couldn't find Cesena.
Divers recovered Cesena's body and he was pronounced dead at 4:55 p.m.
Cook said he wasn't aware of any pre-existing health conditions and alcohol was not a factor.
