MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Voters in Semmes have decided to incorporate, making the community Mobile County's 11th municipality.
Voters approved incorporation on Tuesday by a margin of 434-151.
Semmes will become the state's 461st municipality. The Alabama League of Municipalities says it will be among the 200 largest in the state, with a population of more than 2,000.
After an official notice of incorporation is issued, a probate judge will announce a date for the election of a mayor and city council.
The incorporation effort was launched after some residents of the area expressed concern that they could be annexed into Mobile's city limits.
