MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The candidates trying to be Alabama's next governor aren't joining the current governor in criticizing Attorney General Troy King for suing BP over the Gulf oil spill.
Democratic nominee Ron Sparks says people were tired of waiting for someone to hold BP accountable and the Republican attorney general should be commended for filing suit last week.
Republican nominee Robert Bentley says BP and the federal government failed Alabama citizens, and it is the right of the attorney general to file suit against BP.
King filed suits Thursday against the wishes of Republican Gov. Bob Riley, who called them premature. The governor has signed an executive order giving him approval rights over any contract King's signs with private attorneys to handle the litigation on a contingency fee basis.
