10 Year Cold Case Solved

The body of 40-year-old Debra Wilson was found at the Bee Line Motel in May of 2003, she had been beaten to death.

Ten years later her family is getting some closure.

"We won't have another mother she can't be replaced," Christal Wilson said.

Debra Hopey Wilson was just 40 years old when she was found at the Bee Line Motel.

Investigators say she suffered from blunt force trauma to the head.

"No one wishes that on a loved one, especially something so brutal. It doesn't matter how nobody lived their life," Kesha Wilson Buckner said.

The Dothan Police Department revisited the case and submitted D.N.A evidence to the state forensic lab. It matched one of their initial suspects, 43-year-old Douglas Tyrone Armstrong.

This is the second cold case the department has solved in the past few months and as technology improves so do the chances of solving these cases.

"Technology is on the side of law enforcement. That's why we continue to collect evidence that we perhaps don't have any way to link it to a crime right now because 10 years from now it may benefit us," Dothan Police Department’s Major Steve Parrish said.

Investigators say Armstrong and Wilson knew each other. They believe the two argued and things got out of hand.

The D.N.A evidence along with other evidence tying Armstrong to the scene was presented to a Houston County Grand Jury panel in August.

Last week, Armstrong was indicted for the murder.

“To the family, I can say I'm sorry and thank you for your patience and we hope that justice is served and you have some closure," Parrish said.

"It doesn't bring her back, but we have a little closure a little peace and now we know that she's at peace," Buckner said.

Officials wouldn't say what the D.N.A evidence was, but the other key piece of evidence was a bike Armstrong used to leave the scene of the crime.
