Mobile Carwash App Makes A Splash

It's time to wash away the winter dirt and spring pollen from your car.
No time to hit the car wash?

What if we told you there's an app that brings the car wash to you?
Dan Simon explains.

A typical car wash.

Pull in

Run the car through...

It comes out clean.

But add some technology to the suds. And you get an entirely different experience.

"Looks like our CNN car could use a wash so I’m going to punch up the app and order the service. "

I’m using a new iPhone app call called cherry.

Instead of going to the car wash---- cherry--- through its app-sends the car wash to you.

So I need to set my car wash location; it sees where I am.

After inputting my credit card, license plate number and the make and model of the car.

The app searches for the nearest car washer.

So that's all there is to it. We'll see what happens.

Within 15 minutes & this guy rolls up.

How's it going

And he's brought all of his own supplies to clean the car right on the street inside and out...

Cherry says it uses eco-friendly, biodegradable products. And only one gallon of water is needed where by comparison someone washing their car at home might go through a 100 gallons.

Where did this idea come from?

The idea came from one Sunday afternoon I was looking for a car wash in San Francisco and I pulled up Google maps and typed in car wash and the first 2 places I went to were actually no longer in business.

Travis Vanderzanden is the CEO of cherry.

He left a lucrative job at another technology company to try to fundamentally change an industry.

If you look at the car wash industry-it's this massive 19 billion dollar industry and there hasn't been innovation in decades.

The biggest selling point, he says is the convenience.

No need to drive to the car wash and wait.

Customers in fact, don't need to be present--- but do need keep their doors unlocked.

I they're not comfortable we send them a text message when we arrive to come down and unlock their doors - at no point do we need the keys.

Location based smartphone services are taking off.

The San Francisco Company, Uber, for example---a car service that sends a car to you anywhere has expanded to several other cities and has picked up nearly 40 million in venture capital money.

Actor: Find me a store that sells organic mushrooms for risotto.
Siri: This organic store looks pretty close to you."

And apple, of course, has a lot invested in location services with Siri for the iPhone.

As more people start using of this kind of technology--- cherry, which has raked in more than 4 million in venture capital, is poised to take advantage.

Our customer service will ultimately allow us to win out over traditional car washes.

You're probably wondering how much a service like this costs.

It's about 30 dollars,10 dollars more than an average car wash.

But the company says the tip is included.

No physical money or credit cards are exchanged.

That all happens electronically.

Right now the service is only available in the Bay Area, but the company hopes to go nationwide within 3 years.
