MN Ice Fishermen Enjoy Warm Temps

It sounds unreal, but while people were walking around in shorts and a T-shirt, some were out ice fishing.

Fisherman, Mike Rudh, says, "With this temp, it's very enjoyable."

There's nothing like sitting on the lake fishing with your friends on a nice, warm day. That's exactly what Mike Rudh is doing with his friends... in the middle of March.

It sounds unreal, but while people were walking around in shorts and a T-shirt, some were out ice fishing.

Rudh says, "Usually not this warm, by far."

"It's 70 degrees up here and down here you're sitting on an ice cube," says fellow fisherman, Neal Funkhouser.

Our unbelievably warm temps have caused most of the snow and ice to melt, but on Jewett Lake in Otter Tail county, there's just enough left.

Funkhouser says, "I'd say about a foot left, we were up to 2 feet."

The ice may be thick enough and tough enough to ice fish on, but if you take a look, it's melted, making it slippery and kind of dangerous to walk on.

"Oh yeah, it's slippery. You should have cleats on," says Funkhouser.

They use chains on four wheeler tires and steer clear of holes.

All precautions for a chance at catching the big one. And for all you who think their tackle boxes are a few hooks short for being out here...

"That's part of it. You got to be half crazy to ice fish, but it's enjoyable. Super enjoyable," says Rudh.

And if crazy means a day relaxing on the lake... Well, maybe it's not so bad.

"It's just relaxing. It's just relaxing. I like to eat fish and it's just fun to be out here," says Funkhouser.

These fishermen say this weekend will probably be their last time ice fishing this season.

They say they're already looking forward to fishing on open water.
