KS Free Throw Record Holder

Genius is not always in a big city or right off the interstate...

That's why KCTV5's Brad Fanning hit the road this week to meet a man by the name of Bob Fisher...

And he wasn't easy to find..

He and his wife Connie live on a dirt road about two and half hours away just outside of tiny Centralia, Kansas...

Bob's talents have taken him to a NBA all star game, multiple trips to California and even to Beijing, China where he was on a t-v show with a guy that holds the Guinness world record for kicking himself in the head...

And it all started for bob in a tiny school house gym that was built in the early 19-hundreds...

"Anybody could do what I do if they knew what I know."

Ya won't meet anybody like bob fisher...he starts every day in the basement of his farmhouse shooting on a homemade pop a shot contraption...

He's part Larry Bird, part Albert Einstein and he admits...part Forrest Gump!

"I can recall when I was sitting in grade school and the teacher..I think I was in 6th grade and the teacher came in one day and said there's this new thing called I-q. It measures how smart you are. And I’m sitting there thinking "oh sh$%!" (you’re gonna have to beep that out) because now the gig is up! ha ha ha. "

But a few years ago, after turning 50, bob decided to be the best in the world at something. So he turned himself into the best free throw shooter on the planet....

'The reason I’m the best is because I have 10 Guinness world records hanging on the wall and I have 3 more coming."

He's done everything from making 49 free throws in one minute on one leg to making 33 in 30 seconds to 366 in ten minutes. And he did it, in part, by reading and reading and reading...

"Here's a great book...the genius in all of us, why everything you've been told about genetics, talent and I-q is wrong by David Shank. and that's so true because that's the story of my life."

"I’ve got quite the library when it comes to basketball."

"John Fontanella...they should be listening to him instead of Bobby Knight."

"After reading Fontanella's book I wanted to base my studies on science in stead on someone's opinion."

"The talent code by David Coyle, this was my inspiration."

This tiny 100 year old school house just down the road in Vermillion, Kansas looks like something straight out of the movie "Hoosiers." It's where bob masters the art of free throw shooting. as you can see, there's nothing hi-tech about it....

"I’m just happy to have a place to practice."

He's there every night, sometimes with his wife Connie, other times without...

"Yeah, unique. that's a good word. people around here sometimes say you're the basketball freak. and it's like...yeah.”

"The wrist is the queen of the chess board when it comes to shooting."

"The hinge action of the elbow is pretty simplistic."

"Arc, Magnus force, spin on the ball."

"You've gotta rotate your radial olner joint to where it's facing the basket."

Bob’s a soil conservation technician for the department of agriculture by day. And he used to coach high school ball on the side for Onaga and Axtell, Kansas..

"We had a game where we hit 17 3's. Our post player hit four. ha ha."

But he admits...

" I'll be quite honest, I wasn't very good."

Maybe not coaching a team, but individual shooters. he says he's can help any grade school, junior high, high school, college or NBA player that's willing to learn.. as for what's next on his Guinness world record radar?

"Ya know I’m running out of categories."

But he does have a little something up his sleeve....making two free throws at one time...

He makes two shots at once "did ya get that?

Reporting for off the bench, off the beaten path in Centralia, Kansas. I’m Brad Fanning...
