Although hiring around the country remains sluggish, a lot of companies are promoting employees and giving raises.
While hard work and creativity will likely help, your appearance also matters.
There are plenty of frustrated workers out there - but getting promoted can do a lot to boost the confidence, morale and bank accounts of those who've weathered the recession and are looking to take the next step.
But a survey from career-builder shows that employers consider personal attributes when making those big decisions.
Check this out....when asked what would make them less likely to extend a promotion...employers put piercings and tattoos, bad breath, wrinkled clothes and messy hair at the top of the list.
All of those got negative responses from about a third of all the hiring managers surveyed.
Other personal things to be mindful of...
Too much perfume or cologne can work against you...
As can wearing too much make up.
If your office or cubicle is messy - you probably should tidy up.
And your manager might be put off a bit by chewed fingernails.
Career builder says bosses are looking for the whole package when it comes to promoting successful employees...
Not just strong performance and leadership skills.
They also want someone who conveys a professional image both on the inside and the outside.
But it's illegal for employers to hire, fire or promote on the basis of factors like age, sex, race, religion or sexual orientation.
