Tx: Teacher Donates Kidney To Student's Dad

A kindergarten teacher in Texas has changed the life of one of her students.

She gave the little boy's dad a kidney to help save his life.

Teresa Woodard spent time with them all the day before the surgery.

"I didn't think that God made people like her anymore."

She's a life saver.

"I'm excited. Excuse me. I'm excited because I'm gonna get a second chance to live and be able to be a father for my son."

Marshall Smith’s kidneys are failing.

His arm holds deep scars, from two years of dialysis: three times, every week.

This 50 year old father to five year old Sean didn't have much hope... Until Sean got Mrs. Marie bell for a teacher.

"I blessed to know this family, blessed to have this child in my classroom. And I'm blessed that I can give."

Tuesday afternoon, inside Dallas' Baylor hospital, Mrs. Bell gave Sean’s daddy a kidney.

"This all started with Sean being tardy to kindergarten. His mom wrote a note and the excuse was, his dad was in the hospital. When Mrs. Bell read that, she started asking questions."

"And that was the first I'd known that Marshall was on dialysis and has been for two years."

On the eve of the transplant, Marie Bell remembered that note; the sorrow she felt when she read it.

The elation she felt when she discovered, she was a perfect match.

"I mean every single test she has done has come out to be a match. That's God-sent."

"How could I look at that little boy, in his eyes every day, greet him as his caregiver, teacher, as his educator, and as a mother and know that I didn't try?"

Family members say everyone is resting comfortably.
