Since 18-75, thousands have tried and hundreds have succeeded in swimming the English Channel.
Now, a Chicago area man is about to dip his toes in the water.
Doug McConnell, an investment banker, started swimming competitively at age seven.
He went on to be a star swimmer at the University of Illinois.
Lake Michigan is his training ground for his English Channel challenge.
His training secret?
Good old fashioned hard work.
"Six mornings a week, three to five miles a day and in as cold water as you can find. (You're training for?) The English Channel, in August."
McConnell's using his English Channel attempt as a fundraiser for medical research for Lou Gehrig's disease.
The disease claimed his father's life in 2006.
So far he's raised 35-thousand dollars.
