Bed Bugs!! No one wants them but unfortunately once you get them they are nearly impossible to detect. It's for that reason one Oklahoma couple with their highly trained dog are hoping to sniff out the problem. It's the newest way to put an end to these creepy crawlers.
What you are looking at is a bed bug's biggest threat; a dog with a nose for hunting them down.
Liberty Belle is a highly trained bed bug inspecting dog able to sniff out live bed bugs and their eggs-- Like she does as she makes her way though this home in Northwest Oklahoma City.
At first she finds nothing, that is until she makes her way into the far corner of the master bedroom.
But just how good is Liberty Belle? Just ask her owners, a Norman couple who have turned their bed bug business into a full-time gig.
Liberty’s mom Christen Collymore said, “A trained professional is 30 to 40 percent accurate with finding the live bed bugs the k9's are 96 percent effective in the last k9 study that was conducted.”
And if you think *you* can find them, think again.
Collymore said, “Usually they are hidden within screw holes they are hidden within furniture and they are not going to come out until the lights are dark.”
And when they come-they keep coming.
Collymore said, “This was started in March, March 27th with 20 bed bugs. I would estimate now that it probably has almost a thousand if not more.”
A reason Liberty Belle's hunt for the creepy crawlers is far from over.
And if you think bed bugs are only a residential problem you'd be mistaken. The Norman couple says the bugs are good travelers. Commerical properties now make up 20-percent of their business.
