Elite athletes are a special breed...A combination of skill, hard work and good genes tends to be the winning combination.
But how do you explain these genes?
A British man is planning to run a marathon this weekend--
And at *one-hundred-years old* he hopes to become the oldest person ever to accomplish the feat.
Lucy Lopez has his amazing story.
Most people would call it a stretch for a 100-year-old to be a competitive athlete.
But they haven't met Fauja Singh.
The 100-year-old set 8 world records today...
He smoked the marks set by other 100-year-olds around the world.
He's now the fastest 100-year-old sprinter in multiple distances
He just enjoyed the run, the records are a bonus.
He was always been into sports....but took up competitive running at 89.
Running has really given him a new focus on life.
He lost his wife and one of his sons due to tragic circumstances and that's what made him depressed.
He overcame that by rekindling his passion for running.
Since then he’s run in 7 marathons...
Setting worlds records in 2003 and 2004 in the 90 plus age category
Its his wish to become the oldest runner.
Now he runs and walks about 12 to 14 kilometers a day to keep in shape.
His coach Harmander Singh says he eats very little....but he enjoys ginger curry.
Singh is a local hero in England....
And all this is a warmup for the main event...he'll be one of
5-thousand people to run the full 42 kilometer Toronto marathon on Sunday...
At 67 Ingrid Pugliese admits , she'd never be able to complete a sprint let alone a marathon
I am so out of shape but I gotta work on it.
So he's inspired you?
He sure did, He's sure to inspire many more when Guinness book of world records documents his next historic feat this weekend..
