Sewing Machines Removed from American Apparel Plant in Opp

It could be described as an end to a “way of life” in the Wiregrass.

The sewing machines and equipment have now been removed from the American Apparel plant in Opp.

It was Covington County’s last textile plant. At one time, the textile industry employed thousands in Southeast Alabama.

Area lawmakers blame the federal American Free-Trade Act or NAFTA with sending those jobs to third world countries.
