Angie's List: Health Care Wait Times

A doctor's waiting room usually consist of waiting fifteen to thirty minutes to see your doctor. But, after Doris Webb waited an hour to see her doctor, she was fed up.

""And they finally put me in a room and I told her when they put me in there, I said I would wait ten more minutes because I've been here an hour and in ten minutes, I still hadn't seen the oncologist so I went out front and asked for my co-pay back and told them I had waited long enough, says Doris Webb"

Webb isn't alone. In a recent Angie's List poll, sixty-five percent of the respondents say they had to wait more than an hour.

"But what was more alarming in the poll was that thirty-seven percent of them, when they got in to see the doctor, felt rushed and didn't ask the questions they probably should have," says Angie's List, Angie Hicks.

But experts say there are steps you can take to help you and your family stay healthy and on schedule.

"Preventative care is the key to good health. You don't want to skip going to the doctor, but when you are scheduling plan ahead," says Hicks.

For normal office visits, you should ask for the first morning or after lunch appointment-arrive early, bring medication, and a short list of questions you want addressed.

Consumers should remember to treat health care just like any other hiring decision. If you're still having problems after talking to your doctor, experts suggest you find a new one.
