TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Hillsborough County is giving financial incentives to Internet retailer Amazon.com to build a distribution center.
County commissioners unanimously approved the package at a meeting Wednesday.
Officials say the 1-million-square-foot, $200 million warehouse in Ruskin will create about 1,000 jobs. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Amazon would get rebates from the county amounting to $600 per worker, while the state would provide incentives totaling another $2,400 per worker. The county's incentive payments to Amazon would be spread over four years and begin only after the facility is built and occupied. More can be seen at this link; http://goo.gl/DDnpQ.
Gov. Rick Scott and Amazon announced a deal last week in which Amazon would create a total of 3,000 new jobs in Florida by 2016. With a physical presence in the state, Florida residents would have to start paying sales tax on items bought through the website.
