Why Recess is Important

A group of doctors is stressing the importance of recess. The American Academy of Pediatrics says the daily break is vital to a child’s cognitive, physical, and social development. Physicians say recess should never be withheld as a punishment. The study suggests a lack of play can lead to poor health and lower grades.

The Academy also says every school should have a nurse and every district should have a physician—other than for just emergencies. The group says doctors and nurses can promote better nutrition and physical activity in schools. They can also help students manage chronic conditions like asthma or diabetes.
