September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

In commemoration of this important month, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) is inviting supporters across the country to join the battle against childhood cancer. Whether it’s hosting a special Strawberry Shortcake Alex’s Lemonade Stand, joining the Foundation’s Team Lemon athletic arm, or simply wearing yellow on National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day, ALSF is on a mission to raise significant awareness to help find cures for all kids with cancer.

The following are several ways that individuals can get involved:

Pretzels for a Purpose
Throughout the month of September, Auntie Anne’s, the world's largest hand-rolled soft pretzel franchise will aim to raise $500,000 for ALSF. Auntie Anne’s will ask their guests to visit local stores and purchase a paper lemon icon for $1. In return, Auntie Anne's will provide a coupon for $1 off the next purchase of any pretzel product and drink.

Host a Berry Special Lemonade Stand
For the third year, Strawberry Shortcake and ALSF are teaming up to host special Strawberry Shortcake-themed Alex’s Lemonade Stands during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Volunteers who sign up to host Strawberry Shortcake Lemonade Stands will receive specially branded materials including a strawberry-lemonade recipe, Strawberry Shortcake stickers and the opportunity to win a Strawberry Shortcake product pack. Additionally, for each stand registered (up to 300) American Greetings will donate $50 to ALSF.

Visit an Old Navy Store – September 8 & 9
Old Navy will support ALSF for the second year, after raising more than $100,000 in 2011. Nearly 500 Old Navy stores in the Northern and Southern territories will host lemonade stands throughout the weekend of September 8-9, 2012 as well as sell paper lemons to help children with cancer.

Show Support, Wear Yellow – September 13
As part of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day on Thursday, September 13, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation will invite participants across the country to wear the Foundation’s signature color – yellow. Whether it’s by donning an ALSF t-shirt or simply accessorizing with yellow, the Foundation hopes to create a sea of yellow followed by a slew of questions to raise awareness.

Run, Walk, Bike, Cure Kids’ Cancer
Throughout the month of September, ALSF’s founding sponsor, Volvo, will match every donation made to a member of Team Lemon. Team Lemon is ALSF’s national athletic program, which invites athletes of all calibers to make a difference in the lives of those affected by childhood cancer. Participants run, walk, bike or swim to reach their personal athletic goals while simultaneously helping kids with cancer. Additionally, Volvo will launch an ongoing giving program; with the purchase of every new Volvo, participating Volvo retailers will donate $10 to the Foundation.

Send a Bouquet, Beat Childhood Cancer
Teleflora will offer customers the opportunity to purchase floral bouquets from the Sunny Day Pitcher Collection in support of ALSF. For each bouquet sold at, 10% of the revenue will be donated.

Eat Out to Fight Childhood Cancer
Rosa Mexicano locations across the country will donate $10 to ALSF for each $100 gift card purchased in the month of September. Proceeds will go to ALSF.

Cooking for Kids’ Cancer Cures
Returning for its 3rd annual event, the L.A. Loves Alex’s Lemonade Culinary Cookout, hosted by Chef Suzanne Goin, partner Caroline Styne (Lucques, A.O.C., Tavern) along with Chef David Lentz (The Hungry Cat), will cap off the awareness month at Culver Studios on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Neil Patrick Harris and his partner, E! News Correspondent David Burtka, will return as Honorary Co-Hosts and Jimmy Kimmel, an outstanding champion of this fundraiser and member of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation’s National Advisory Board, will reprise his role as Master of Ceremonies. Goin, Styne and Lentz have again enlisted the support and generosity of their culinary friends around the nation including Giada De Laurentiis, Cat Cora, Marc Vetri and more to donate their time and services to raise funds and awareness for ALSF.

Show Support Via Social Media
ALSF will provide supporters with several tools to raise awareness for childhood cancer during the month of September including a 30 Ways in 30 Days social media campaign. During each day of the month, ALSF will provide ideas for supporters to join the fight from changing a Facebook profile photo to participating in a virtual lemonade stand. In addition to raising awareness for childhood cancer throughout the month of September, the month will also mark the return of the Foundation’s Bridge Grants. In late 2011, the Foundation introduced the new grant category in response to the steady decrease in research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Bridge Grant funding is designed as a lifeline for projects that received excellent scores but did not receive funding from the NIH to keep the projects of researchers on track while they reapply for funding. ALSF will soon begin accepting applications for the second cycle of Bridge Grants, which provide recipients with $100,000 over a 12 month period.

About Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation:
ALSF emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alex Scott (1996-2004). In 2000, 4-year-old Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex’s first stand, the Foundation has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with supporters nationwide carrying on her legacy. To date, ALSF, a registered 501(c)3 charity, has raised more than $55 million toward finding a cure, funding over 250 pediatric cancer research projects nationally.
