School Lunches are Being Kicked Up A Notch, but are the New Options Better?

School lunch, most children dread having to eat what's put on their plate but not this group.

"It's pretty good everyday," says 5th grader Brody Barnett.

"It was good," says 3rd grader Jayvia Carter.

“They're good," says another 5th grader.

But not only are these colorful lunches good for the taste buds, they are more nutritious.
Students are given more healthy options, making it mandatory for students to choose a vegetable and a fruit which these students also love.

"I like it because I do better, in school and I'm healthy," says 3rd grader Jayvia Carter.

"Because their healthy foods, so you can be strong and run faster," says 4th grader Jennifer May.

Not only that, but students say that a healthy meal will help them perform better in the classroom.

“With me I loving reading so, it helps me just stay focused and read a lot," says 5th grader Brody Barnett.

And school nutritionist Marie Payne says that is exactly the goal of a more nutritious meal.

"The purpose of this is, is to make sure students receive their fruits and vegetables everyday," says Marie Payne.

Along with these healthy meal options is a chance for students to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

"They'll be able to fight off different diseases, preventable disease like diabetes, heart disease, and a lot of that is going to be attributed to overweight and obesity," says Marie Payne.

A problem that school systems in the wiregrass the nation want to change about our children.

The federal government has instituted the healthy hunger free kids act, which requires school system to offer healthy lunch menu choices.
