WEDOWEE, Ala. (AP) - A World War II airman who died during a raid on Berlin in 1944 is finally being buried.
Staff Sgt. Ralph McDonald was to be buried Friday in the Wedowee
community in east Alabama.
McDonald, who was born in LaGrange, Ga. In 1921 and was adopted
by a Randolph County family, was a tail-gunner on a B-24 Liberator
bomber, stationed in England.
On April 29, 1944, McDonald was part of a 392nd Bombardment Group crew that took off for a raid on Berlin. Eight aircraft and 77 men were lost that day.
Human remains were discovered at the crash site in 2003, and McDonald was identified through dental records.
Barbara Ramsey, a funeral home employee, said the service will
include an honor guard from Ft. Rucker.
