Mildand City Residents Vote 'No Confidence' Against Mayor

(Dothan, AL)-- Midland City Residents have turned in a vote of no confidence for Mayor Virgil Skipper. Councilman George Williams turned in the petition with more than 200 signatures Tuesday night.

Williams said residents have many issues, including how Skipper is handling city money.

"Going through public records we found a receipt addressed to Mayor Skipper for a car repair," Williams said. "The car does not belong to the city, so why is the city paying for it? he said.

City Clerk Melissa Knighton believes the check could have been signed off by accident. However Knighton also said that all city bookkeeping is audited and held to state standards.

"This isn't about the Mayor, this is a witch hunt," Knighton said. "We have checks and balances on everything," she said.

People also accuse Skipper of being rude and refusing to listen during meetings. However, some council members argue that while the public can attend a meeting, it doesn't necessarily give them the right to direct the meeting.

Midland's city attorney is now looking incident. Residents will also have to go through the attorney if they want to push the mayor out. Mayor Skipper is not making any comments at this time.
