Abortion Clinic Closes

Posted: 5:18 PM May 19, 2012
Reporter: Kassi Shelley

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- A Birmingham abortion clinic that was targeted in a 1998 bombing has lost its license to operate. Officials at the Alabama Department of Health said The New Woman All Women Health Clinic was forced to close Friday. The Birmingham News reports that the clinic's owner agreed to surrender the facility's license after state officials found two cases where patients overdosed on drugs and needed to be taken to a hospital. No other company has successfully applied to run the clinic. Scott Morro, an attorney for clinic owner Diane Derzis, described the closing as unfortunate and said it had provided services for women for years. The clinic was targeted in a bombing by Eric Robert Rudolph, who later pleaded guilty to federal charges related to that attack and others.
