Judge Orders Man to Jail for Pants Style

Posted: 9:25 AM Apr 11, 2012

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- An Alabama circuit judge says it was a matter of respect when he sentenced a man to three days in jail for contempt of court for wearing so-called saggy pants in his courtroom.

Circuit Judge John Bush says he finds it disrespectful and a disruption to court business when people wear pants below their waistline in his chambers. He said he cut 20-year-old LaMarcus D. Ramsey a break by only sentencing him on Tuesday to three days instead of the maximum five.

Ramsey was in court on charges of receiving stolen property. Bush says Ramsey will go on trial sometime after his three-day stint in the Autauga Metro jail.

Calls to Ramsey's public defender were not immediately returned.
