Former CIA Officer Sentenced to 2 1/2 Years in Prison

Posted: 4:43 PM Jan 25, 2013
Reporter: CNN

A former C-I-A officer who pleaded guilty to identifying a secret agent was sentenced to two and a half years in prison today.

John Kiriakou and prosecutors agreed on the term as part of a plea agreement struck in October.

Kiriakou declined to speak in the Alexandria, Virginia, federal courtroom before his sentencing by a U-S District judge.

The judge rejected defense attempts to characterize Kiriakou as a whistle-blower.

He said it's a case of someone who betrayed a "very solemn trust" and said he would have gotten more time had he been convicted at trial.

The defense attorney said during the sentencing hearing Kiriakou did not intend to harm anyone or his country.
