Graduation Rates Increase for Dothan City Schools

Graduation rates have improved once again for Dothan city schools. Students in the Dothan City School District are thriving. This makes year number three for an increased percentage of students receiving high school diplomas.

For Dothan junior basketball player Chris Graham, his education means everything to him. Off the basketball court he wants to pursue a career in music and appreciates the way his teachers prepare him.

"They really want to see us successful, all of us," said Graham.

Dothan high assistant principal Donnie Chambers wants all of his students to succeed that's why he finds joy in being part of a school that has seen consistent improvement in graduation rates.

"A lot of hard work has gone into it. Faculty and staff have worked real hard, students have worked real hard Dothan high we've set a goal and each year we've reached it and we've gotten a little better every year, said Chambers.

The district's success has been centered on programs and field trips that show kids that they do have a future and a chance to be prosperous. The State graduation rate is 80 percent and DCS is at 88 percent, they are eight points above the State average and they are really excited about this.

Allyson Morgan, the school district's director of secondary education is more than happy but she says that she’s striving to see that percentage grow even more.

"I would love to see it at 98 percent. I believe that all students have the opportunity to graduate as an educator I think that should be our goal that somehow that we can get every student to graduate," said Morgan

The district wants to give students a positive outlook on completing high school. Northview High is also part of the Dothan City School District and the yare included in the graduation rate success. Realistically, Dothan city school leaders are shooting for an 89-percent graduation rate this academic school year. One of the programs helping the district's rate is called the accelerated recovery center.
