National Night Out shows an effort to strengthen participation in crime fighting efforts.
It began in the 1980's and the Dothan police department has been a part of this for the past 11 years. It's Dothan's night to help fight against crime. Today's festivities are all about engaging the community to prevent crime. Many local law enforcement agencies are here to open up dialogue and build connections with those living in the Wiregrass. This is also an educational event with lots of activities for children and adults.
"It's teamwork I mean police don't see everything. There's more citizens then there are police officers, you guys literally are our eyes and ears. It's very important that you guys tell us where things are and we wouldn't find half the things if it weren't for you guys," said Brian Ozbun, from the Dothan Police Explorers.
More than 30 million others across the country are joining National Night Out in the fight against crime.
