Winter Weather Awareness Week Begins in Alabama Today

Monday, the National Weather Service and Alabama Emergency Management Agencies kicked off Winter Weather Awareness Week.

They begin this week with a look back at some of the most historic winter weather events in Alabama.

Looking back to February of 2010, heavy snow fell due to a low pressure system skirting across the Gulf of Mexico. This system brought as much as seven inches in Troy just as the Winter Olympics was kicking off in Vancouver, Canada.

A year before that, on March 1st, 2009, parts of the wiregrass saw a dusting from a snow event. The heaviest snowfall totals in the state from that storm were in Lee County. Specifically, Auburn saw 5 inches of snow.

And, there was the storm of the century in 1993, where some places in the state saw a foot or more of snow across the state.

Even the city of Dothan saw some significant snow. Some Alabama communities even reported rare thunder-snow from the powerful storm.

Tuesday, the Weather Service takes a look at winter weather terminology.
