The Alabama Press Association has honored the winners of its 2013 Better Newspaper Contest.
Contest winners were recognized Saturday at the organization's summer convention.
Organizers say 72 newspapers submitted 2,668 entries in this year's contest.
Award winners in categories including general excellence, most improved and best presswork were announced during the banquet.
The Birmingham News, The Opelika-Auburn News, The Shelby County Reporter, The Southeast Sun and 280 Living were each named as general excellence winners in their respective divisions.
General excellence awards were based on points that newspapers earned in five different categories, which included public service and freedom of information.
