COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- Several hundred spectators gathered on the
Chattahoochee River in Columbus for the ceremonial launch of a $23
million project to bring whitewater rafting to Columbus and Phenix
City, Ala.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that supporters say the
project will be the longest whitewater course in an urban setting
in the world.

Authorities say the 2.5-mile course will stretch from just south
of the North Highland Dam to a take-out point somewhere near the
Trade Center.

Upcoming work will involve heavy equipment, which will be used
to create rapids in the Chattahoochee.

The project has been spearheaded for more than a decade by
Columbus businessman John Turner.
