Property owners in unincorporated Walton County are seeing their annual fire assessment fee triple.
The Walton County Commission approved the increase by a 3-to-2 vote.
The current $25 fee is going up to $75. In addition, there will be a charge of 75-cents per acre of agricultural or vacant land. Those opposed say the increase will be devastating to seniors and those living on fixed income.
The new fire assessment rates will only affect those property owners that are serviced by the Walton County Fire Rescue Agency.
