The FBI's list of people banned from flying to or within the U.S. has more than doubled over the last year.

Counterterrorism officials tell CNN the "no-fly list" has 21,000 names on it. Americans make up about 500 of those names.

The list's growth spurt was sparked by Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab. He is the Nigerian man who, back in 2009, tried to blow up a U.S. passenger jet with explosives in his underwear.

Officials say, they will now include someone on the list if a credible person raises concern about someone.

In AbdulMutallab's case, his father had tried to warn authorities.

Prior to the case, the standard was to only put those who pose a specific threat to a plane on the list.
