US Biathlon Athlete Gives Up Spot for Twin Sister

An American athlete from Colorado earned a spot on Team USA's biathlon team, but she gave it all up for a teammate she felt deserved to be at the games even more - her twin sister.

Tracy Barnes made Team USA but gave up her place so her identical sister Lanny could compete.

"I felt she deserved the spot," Tracy said.

The Colorado sisters race in the biathlon, a sport that combines cross country skiing and rifle shooting. At this year's Olympic trials, Lanny got sick and Tracy finished one spot ahead, just making the cut.

"Had she not been sick, I really felt she would have made the team," said Tracy. "I've always felt she's a better biathlete than me. I really felt she should go."

"You know as twins we always have this thing where I think she's better than me and she thinks I'm better than her," said Lanny.

Lanny says she didn't want Tracy to give up her spot.

"My initial reaction was 'no, there's no way'. She was very adamant, you know; she's my stubborn little sister."

Lanny says her sister's sacrifice made her even more motivated.

"It just makes me want to push that much harder and race that much harder. I'm racing for two people here."

Lanny came in 64th out of 82 racers in her first biathlon event. No American woman has ever finished better than 12th. Her sister cheered her from the sidelines.

"I knew that she went out there and gave it everything she had," said Tracy. "I was really proud of her and her effort."

Lanny says she's just grateful her sister gave her a shot.

Lanny may get one more chance to compete in Sochi in another women's biathlon event on Friday.
