Troy University Students to Celebrate King’s Legacy Through Weekend Service Projects

TROY – Troy University students will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King this weekend by taking part in several service opportunities in the surrounding community.

Operating under the theme, “Strengthen Our Community, Bridge Barriers, Create Meaningful Change,” the Martin Luther King Weekend of Service will provide service opportunities for students on Friday, Saturday and Monday. The weekend event is a project of the University’s Office of Service Learning and Civic Engagement.

“We are looking forward to this weekend. Dr. King's life was marked by service and this weekend will honor his legacy,” said Jonathan Cellon, Coordinator of Service Learning and Civic Engagement in the University Center for Student Success. “Through the service projects planned, students will have an opportunity to address some of our community’s most critical needs.”

Projects scheduled for Friday include reading to Troy Elementary School students, in-class reading and craft projects with students at Head Start, crafts and fundraiser event preparation with the Colley Senior Center, landscaping and improvement projects at the Miracle League playground, games with residents of Noble Manor and after-school activities with Troy Elementary School students.

On Saturday and again on Monday, students will have the opportunity to do painting and landscaping work with Habitat for Humanity. Also on Monday, students will be participating in home improvement projects for veterans in Montgomery through the Rebuilding Together organization as a part of the Hands on River Region project. Students also will have the opportunity to take part in Campus Emergency Response Training in which they will learn emergency procedures and skills needed to assist in times of emergency situations on campus.
