Are you one of those travelers who tries to book flights well in advance to get a great deal?

That may not be the ticket to locking in the best price.

As Felicia Taylor tells us, some new research could change the way you search for flights.

It's all about the timing.

And the best time to get a cheaper airfare appears to be 6 weeks before your flight.

That's according to data compiled by the industry group A-R-C.

It looked at billions of dollars worth of ticket sales in 2011 and found the average flight cost $358 dollars round trip.

But to get the best price - about a 6% discount - you need to book 6 weeks before your flight.

That's about $20-dollars, which is not a huge discount but it could cover much of the fee for checking your bags.

Naturally, the closer you get to departure, the more expensive it usually is.

And last year -- booking more than 6-weeks out was more pricey on average.

The researchers at A-R-C admit there is no guarantee with this. It's just a trend they have noticed.

And if you fly during peak times or around holidays, the trend is less likely to happen.

Bottom line -- shop around.

Look when other people might not be searching -- like early in the morning or late at night.

And another recent report said the day of the week matters.

Fare-compare says booking flights on Tuesdays,

Wednesdays and Saturdays are usually the cheapest.

Also -- use sites like kayak and fare compare to find the best deals.

They'll search both travel websites and the carriers themselves.
