Police Seek Clues In Fire at Toomer's Oaks

Police hope a video provides clues about a fire that damaged the oak trees of Toomer's Corner at Auburn University.

Authorities said the blaze started when toilet paper draping the trees caught fire early Sunday morning.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports that university officials said in a statement that an examination of the scene revealed significant damage to both trees.

Auburn police Capt. Tom Stofer said police hope to glean clues from video shot by a city webcam that's trained on Toomer's Corner. Police said it was unclear whether the trees were intentionally set ablaze.

The trees were draped in toilet paper following the school's football victory over Alabama A&M.

A University of Alabama fan is awaiting trial after he was charged with poisoning the landmark oak trees two years ago.
