Swimming Safety in Open Water After Flooding

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- The rain is out of sight, but the effects on the county are far from out of mind.

Many locals and visitors pack their Labor Day picnic and beach bag and head to Blue Lake. But, this weekend might need a change of plans.

The Washington County Health Department is testing Blue Lake and other bodies of water for contaminants. They are sending water samples to labs to see what kinds and how many are in the waters.

Officials said that people should be aware if they start to feel ill.

"With this type of run-off, most people would get sick with gastrointestinal sicknesses, mainly nausea and diarrhea" Washington County Health Department Administrator Rick Davis said.

People should also be extra cautious if they have open wounds.
