On 8-24-14 at approximately 7:30 pm a Deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was flagged down by a citizen in Greenwood in reference to an assault.
When the Deputy encountered the suspect, Michael Hamm Jr., and ordered him to stop, he fled on foot, westbound on Smith St. During the foot chase Hamm entered a residence occupied by a female and her children, uninvited, in an effort to elude capture. He exited through another door and escaped temporarily.
At that time the K-9 Tracking Team from Jackson Correctional Institution in Malone was returning from assisting Seminole County Georgia with an escaped prisoner. They responded and assisted the Sheriff’s Office in locating the suspect.
As the officers approached Hamm again, he fled into a residence and attempted to hide in a closet. He was taken into custody without incident.
The investigation revealed that Hamm became angry at a female at a residence on Smith St. and kicked her vehicle. When she exited her car to confront him, he took her phone and punched her in the face.
She ran into the residence and locked herself in a bedroom to get away from him. Hamm armed himself with a hammer and busted the bedroom door. Once inside Hamm threw the female around the bedroom.
When he exited the residence he was confronted by the officer and the chase ensued. Due to the fact that Hamm was fleeing to avoid capture when he entered the female’s residence, he was charged with Burglary of an Occupied Structure While in Flight. He was also charged with Battery, Criminal Mischief, and Resisting an Officer w/o Violence. He was lodged in the Jackson County Correctional Facility to await first appearance.
