Sunken, Abandoned Boats Being Removed from Dog River

By  |

It's been 10 years since Hurricane Ivan hit the Gulf Coast. Since the storm, 57 boats have been abandoned in the Dog River.

Local and federal groups finally have the resources to start removing those boats. Those who live along the river are ready to see the boats gone.

"We finally have gotten some funding through NOAA and through state lands division through the Marine Debris Program and we are going to be able have a contractor to pick them up," said Nick Matranga with Dog River Clearwater Revival.

A few boats have already been pulled out, but there's still a long way to go.

Although there are 57 abandoned or sunken boats in the river, funding only allows for 24 to be removed. Crews have two months to remove all 24.

Some will stay in the river for another year of research.
