FORT RUCKER -- Many families look forward to summer vacation for a break and to spend time together. Fortunately, they do not need to look any further than their own backyard.
Fort Rucker offers a number of options for families that are free and open to the public. Some activities include fishing, swimming and boating on Lake Tholocco, camping, swimming at Splash water park and golfing at Silver Wings Golf Course.
"We want to make Fort Rucker a destination," MWR Marketing Director Janice Erdlitz said. "We have a little bit of something for everyone to take care of their needs."
Some activities do require an authorized permit that mainly for active duty, retired, DoD and full time contractors carry. You can find out more information on those permits at http://www.ftruckermwr.com .
Those activities include renting a cabin on Lake Tholocco and renting a boat.
All of the activities mentioned in this article are free and open to the public. Visitors only need to show photo ID at the gate.
For fishing, visitors may purchase a state license and post permit on Fort Rucker. The permit allows them to fish anywhere on post.
