Student Left on School Bus Near Macon

School officials and a sheriff's department in middle Georgia are trying to determine how a 10-year-old special needs student was left alone on a school bus for hours.
The Telegraph of Macon reports the Dames Ferry Elementary School student boarded a school bus Tuesday morning and should have been dropped off at 8 a.m. Officials say the child was left alone on the bus until about 1 p.m., when the driver was preparing for the afternoon route.
Jones County schools Superintendent William Matthews says a nurse evaluated the student and said the child was not injured.
Matthews says the driver may not have followed standard procedure of walking through the bus to check for students and to make sure the back door was locked.
No charges have been filed.
