Special Olympic Athletes Compete in Rhythmic Gymnastics

Local Special Olympic athletes are showing off their skills.

Girls from Mobile and Shelby Counties joined the Dothan Divas team to compete in rhythmic gymnastics Thursday.

The two dozen girls each learned four routines for the sectional competition.

The Dothan Divas coach, Jerry Carpenter, said it's incredible to watch these girls learn each routine.

"This is a really big deal because with swimming and things like that it's more natural, but the gymnastics takes a little more thought and just the fact that these girls can do that is amazing. Our girls are very special. They are awesome," said Carpenter.

The winners will advance to the state competition in Troy next month.
