More than 25-hundred Southeast Alabama Medical Center employees celebrated the holidays this year with a Christmas party.
And to keep with the spirit of giving, employees brought a toy with them.
“At the same time we get the same opportunity for them to show their generosity for toys for tots, it’s another way to reach out to the less fortunate.” Vice president of medical affairs, Chuck Harkness said.
“We brought a couple of toys down that our department collected and were putting them in a box for toys for tots and I think it’s a wonderful thing to give to the kids.” SAMC employee Kevin Sheppard said.
For other employees, donating to toys for tots has a deeper meaning.
“I did four years in the marine corp. Toys for tots with the marine corp is very important to me and I just enjoy helping out where I can and when I can.” Radiology Engineer Kelly Walker said.
“When you don’t have the money to buy a Christmas gift for your kids and then you have the opportunity that you could give to a family in need is very important for that kid to have that present during Christmas.” SAMC employee Doug Phillips said.
And with so many Christmas deals in stores, walker says you don't have to spend an arm and a leg.
“I brought several items for the girls, several items for the boys. Went to toys r us and found some great deals, to for one, half off stuff.” Walker said.
But walker says it's not about how much you spend, it's the thought of helping others through the holidays that counts.
If every employee at the medical center brings a toy, they would have more than 2-thousand gifts to give to toys for tots.
