Soldiers Receive a Hot Meal and Thank You from the Wiregrass Community

DOTHAN -- Thursday started well for local soldiers in the Wiregrass as they filled their plates with hot breakfast food during the annual Fort Rucker-Wiregrass chapter of the AUSA Kick-Off Breakfast at the Dothan Civic Center.

Hundreds of soldiers received praise for their service and dedication to our freedom.

Former soldier and inspirational blind veteran Steven Baskis addressed the audience. He lost all vision in Iraq in 2008 when an IED exploded outside of his vehicle.

Since coming home, Baskis has climbed the eighth tallest peak in North America and started participating in competitive sports.

He said soldiers must continue living for all of those who never came home.

"The fact that I lost a good friend next to me when I was injured, I want to live my life for him and for many other people."

The chapter also awarded seven local college students with scholarships who are veterans, soldiers or military family members.
