Controversy continues around a slot machine referendum in Washington County, Fla.
'The Citizens for Positive Change' is trying to defeat that referendum.
They had their final public rally Thursday night at Ebro City Hall. That's just around the corner from the Ebro Greyhound Park.
Ebro's owners are asking voters to pass a referendum that would let them offer slot machine gambling. They're planning to build a $30 million resort for that venture, and if it's approved they plan to give some of the proceeds to local government.
That resort would create an estimated 1,500 new jobs, but opponents say the social costs aren't worth it.
"I don't see how anybody could vote yes for something that I know will bring in so much crime [and] affect family life," said Pastor B. Longo of Ebro Baptist Church.
"The increase in crime we've seen everywhere they've opened slots as well as the addiction that goes with it, and of course, addiction brings more crime," said Pastor Tim Lanham of Live Oak Baptist Church. "So those are the things that really concern us about the added cost to Washington County as opposed to the benefit.
Tuesday's slots referendum is open to all of Washington County's registered voters.
