BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) -- An Alabama sheriff's deputy killed in a shootout last fall while assisting medical responders is being honored by the Sons of the American Revolution.

Reports say the group's General Galvez Chapter plans to present its Law Enforcement Commendation Medal and Certificate to the widow of Deputy Scott Ward on Tuesday during the Baldwin County Commission meeting.

Ward was killed Nov. 23 in a shootout at the home of Michael Jansen, who opened fire on medical responders and deputies answering a 911 call from the man's mother. Jansen was also killed in the shooting.

Court records showed he had a history of mental problems and grappled with drug and alcohol dependency.
