Headland, AL - Main Street in Headland is usually a quiet spot in a small southern town. But that peace and quiet vanished Thursday when dozens of police officers swarmed in.
Police say a man armed with an assault rifle appeared to be breaking into a home.
“This woman drove by and she said she saw a guy waving an assault rifle on the corner and she called police. Headland is a small town. It's a small country town No one usually does this,” said Headland resident Hunter Bright.
When police arrived, they say the suspect began shooting.
No one was injured, and the suspect was taken into custody within ten minutes. Police say he appeared mentally ill.
“No call is the same. This subject here when being taken down did not possess a weapon in an aggressive manner. Gratefully this was taken without incident,” said Headland Police Chief Mark Jones.
But the situation wasn't over. Authorities believed there could have been a second suspect.
Multiple law enforcement agencies from Henry and Houston counties responded to help in the search, but they didn't find any other suspects.
For many officers in Henry County this is the second time this week they've dealt with this situation.
“I don't know what is stimulating the folks to grab their guns and start shooting at the police, but we don't want them to know that if you do shoot at the police all the officers are going to respond and back them up,” said Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox.
They’ll hope for outcomes like this latest one.
“Just very grateful that everyone involved is going home,” said Jones.
Maddox added, “Anytime no one is hurt, somebody made the right decisions.”
Police are not ready to release the suspect's name, but they will charge him with attempted murder, menacing and obstructing government operation.
