Senior Transit Presents Problem in Florida
America's largest-ever generation, the baby boomers, are starting to retire. Eventually, many of them will have to give up their cars. And just how they'll get around is an unanswered question.

If you don't ride the bus now, chances are one day you will, and you could be in for a big shock.
Roseann Asztalos is nearing the day when she'll have to put the car in park permanently. It's a day she's not looking forward to, not with the transportation options in her hometown of Zephyrhills.
"They do have a limited bus service, but you have to make an appointment for, like, two weeks in advance if you have a doctor's appointment or you want to go to the store," she said.
That's a problem spelled out in a new report that finds within four years 60 percent of seniors in Tampa Bay and 58 percent in Orlando will have poor access to public transit.
These maps show how critical it'll become when more baby boomers, who live primarily in the suburbs, begin to retire. As unhappy as a lot of seniors are now, just imagine what the map will look like in 30 years. If nothing's done to prepare for the future, the baby boom generation could make things exponentially worse.
Which is why the report is calling for money intended for highways to be spent on vanpools, buses and even trains. That's bound to please at least a few seniors, but transportation advocate Doug Callaway's worried about the impact on traffic if highways can't be expanded.
"The idea of flexing funds back and forth, that's appropriate, but if there's not enough money in the first place, flexing is simply robbing Peter to pay Paul," Callaway said.
Ultimately, it may take private investment to ensure seniors can get their ride.
Roseann doesn't care how more public transportation happens as long as it does.
"Seniors need something," she said. "It's not good for them to stay in the house. They need to get out and be with people."
...Because if boomers are anything, they're a social force that loves to get around.
The report finds there will be few reliable transit options in Jacksonville. 77 percent of that city's seniors are projected to have a tough time getting around.
