The Bay County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert this afternoon after a complaint was filed by a local victim who lost $75,000 in the scam.

The victim stated to BCSO investigators she received a notice in the mail from Global International Sweepstakes, from Jamaica. She followed instructions by mailing a check for $40,000 to claim her millions of dollars in winnings. She was then contacted and told that the postal service had lost her check. She sent another check for $35,000 before realizing her mistake.

This scam appears to target senior citizens in an attempt to lure them into sending money to claim sweepstakes winnings and a Mercedes Benz.

The Bay County Sheriff’s Office has received information from the Attorney General’s Office in Tallahassee warning law enforcement about this scam. If anyone believes they have been victimized by this scam they are encouraged to contact local law enforcement. Anyone receiving this letter in the mail from Global International Sweepstakes is warned not to respond.
