DOTHAN -- Local residents lined up Thursday morning at the Salvation Army in Dothan. They waited to submit the necessary information for the Christmas assistance program.

Program eligibility is determined on a case by case basis. Those in charge consider circumstances such as horrific accidents in the family, major surgeries and poverty guidelines.

Program leaders said helping folks have presents under their trees makes all of their work worth it.

"I've seen the bright smiles on the kids' faces and the adults who are very grateful when they see what they've gotten," Salvation Army volunteer Linda Bates said.

Last year, more than 1,700 families were helped. Residents wishing to take part in the program can still sign up on October 4, 8,9, 17 and 18. Those will take place in the Salvation Army Community Room. from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
