Governor Gary Herbert announced Monday that Utah plans to bid for the 2026 Winter Games.

Governor Hebert had asked an exploratory committee to look into a bid for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games – and announced that they had made a decision that bidding for the games would make sense.

Herbert said Monday that the games would be good for the economy and that the last Olympics brought $5-million into the economy.

He said that the city is ready and willing to host another Winter Games and that Utah has become the “winter sports capitol of the United States” with many athletes training in Utah.

The city must wait for the USOC to make a decision to pursue either a Summer Games or the 2026 Winter Olympics. If they decide to bid for the winter, Salt Lake will be in competition with the Reno-Tahoe area and Denver to host the games.

Herbert said all money raised for the bid was done so privately.
